Central Colorado Roadtrip with Dad

May 13-14, 2005

These are the pictures that I took while on a weekend road trip with my dad. We went from Boulder to Leadvill via the casinos and stayed in Frisco for the night (with a side jaunt to Breckinridge to see what's there). Then on to Vail (which was virtually closed for renovations and "mud") and Minturn and finally on to Ledvill for lunch and back to Boulder through Loveland Pass. It was fun and we saw lots of mountains and mines and slurry/tailing fields. We also saw Camp Hale, in the the National Forest, where the 10th Mountain Division trained for mountain and alpine combat for WWII, its also where a lot of modern winter sports gear was developed initially.

I wish I'd taken more pictures, but I didn't I got lots of goofy postcards along the way. If you're lucky, maybe I've sent you one.

frisco, CO lake
Lake Dillon, outside of Frisco, Colorado.
It's looking VERY low.

continental divide, loveland pass
Me at the Loveland Pass cintinental divide. On one side of this mountain the water flowed down toward the west, or the PAcific, on the other it flowed east, toward to Colorado River and on to the Gulf of Mexico. It was neat to see and think about as the snow around us was melting (which did stop skiers at all, just slowed them down).

car view
Much of this trip was spent in the car because a) it was "mud season" or b) there was not much to get out for. Mud season means its too warm to ski and too cold for moutain biking or hiking or fishing yet.

valley
Some things were strange to see, like this, one side of the little valley had trees and the other didn't. The tree like was quite pronounced in many places too.

swollen mountain river in spring
The scene was probably prittier in real life, but it was worth stopping the car for (and to stretch). The swollen river was especially poignent just coming from seeing all that snow at A Baisn and Loveland Pass.

With in car becoming available to me in August, I'm excited to be able to go out into Colorado more and see more of the little towns we drove by and try some of the ice cream and pizza places we had to pass up on. :-P
